Surrey Hospital Foundation Thanks Dr. Chung and Family for Donation to Joseph Chung Pediatric Oncology Unit

Wednesday, July 28, 2021

The Joseph Chung Pediatric Oncology Unit has transformed into a bright, beautiful space for children receiving chemotherapy and other cancer treatments, with the help of Drs. Peter and Stephanie Chung’s $1 million dollar donation.

Drs. Peter and Stephanie’s $1 million dollar donation to the Surrey Hospital Foundation is now available for the world to see through a “thank you” video by the Surrey Hospital Foundation.

In December 2019, Drs. Peter and Stephanie Chung made a $1 million dollar donation to Surrey Hospital Foundation’s pediatric oncology unit on behalf of their late sun, Joseph. As of July 2021, the Joseph Chung Pediatric Oncology Unit has reopened for spectators to see this beautifully transformed space.

“The Joseph Chung Pediatric Oncology Unit is a beautiful new addition to the Children’s Health Centre,” says Loraine Jenkins, Executive Director of Maternal and Child Health, Fraser Health. “Children receiving chemotherapy and other cancer treatments now have this bright and peaceful new space, where they can overlook the colourful, outdoor playground… We offer heartfelt thanks to Drs. Peter and Stephanie Chung and their family, for this amazing gift, in honour of their son.”

As part of the $15 million transformation of Surrey Memorial Hospital, children and their families are welcomed into a whimsical, woodland-themed space, featuring friendly animals and vivid colours. A new state-of-the-art app allows an interactive experience with an augmented reality squirrel, Chip, who welcomes children to the unit and walks them through their treatment.

“Thank you [Dr. Chung and family] for bringing care close to home for our children,” says Jane Adams, President and CEO, Surrey Hospital Foundation. “We are grateful for each and every gift we received throughout our year long campaign. Our children are precious and they need and deserve the best possible care.”

The Children’s Health Centre at Surrey Memorial Hospital is the regional centre for children’s health in the Fraser Health region. Forty-three percent of BC’s children live in the Fraser Health region, and Surrey Memorial Hospital sees more than 50,000 children every year.
