A Memorable Evening: The Joseph Chung Scholarship Award Dinner & Panel Discussion

Monday, January 27, 2020

Nearly 80 past and current recipients of the Joseph Chung Scholarship Fund gathered at the Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel for a celebratory dinner and panel discussion, featuring the former Prime Minister of South Korea Un-Chan Chung; the current Deputy Leader of the Opposition of the Senate, The Honorable Yonah Martin; and Dr. Peter Chung, CEO of Primacorp Ventures and Co-Founder of the Joseph Chung Scholarship Fund.

A three-course meal was served during an engaging discussion between the three panelists and the audience was given an opportunity to ask individual questions to each of the panel members.

The Honorable Yonah Martin spoke to her experience as a teacher and how her education and teaching background has helped her to further serve the community within a political career, as the first Canadian-Korean Senator.

“There are so many parallels between teaching and politics,” says Hon. Yonah Martin. “In both, you are speaking to the public and serving your communities, making a difference in the lives of others.”

Former Prime Minister Un-chan Chung – earning a bachelor’s degree from Seoul National University, a master’s degree from Miami University, and a doctoral degree from Princeton University – spoke to how financial assistance was able to help him achieve his career goals.

“Education is an equalizer in society,” says Former Prime Minister Chung. “The recipients of the Joseph Chung Scholarship are working towards making themselves better citizens in society, which enables a more equal society.”

Dr. Peter Chung ended the evening by speaking to the importance of being efficient, effective, and hard-working upon completing formal education. He noted that business and personal success is attributed to one’s attitude in life and how crucial it is to “maximize your talent” in supporting the community.
